Phyllis Schlafly ran for Congress as a Republican in 1952 in a heavily Democrat district. She ran again in 1970 against an incumbent. Although she lost both races, she considered those chapters of her life to be an invaluable source of political experience. She would later jokingly say “I’ve run for office and I wouldn’t wish it on Betty Friedan.”
